Comment Re:Use Windows Embdded, not XP Home (Score 2, Informative) 159

I use EWF (which stands for Enhanced Write Filters) on my XP machine in my car. It works very well up to the point where the tempory space when the cached disk writes overrun the memory buffer. It has only happened once when I forgot to turn off EWF to install something. The directions I used are located on MP3Car.com. Comment Acronis Universal Restore (Score 1) 349

I just did this to use a single image on my company's multiple versions of their standard hardware (they use everything until it dies a horrible death). I used to use nLite to automate the install and just slipstreamed the drivers in but a driver for a new model's raid controller would not integrate so we switched to Acronis and it worked the first time. Imaging from the Acronis-prepped DVD now takes 15 minutes which used to use to take 45 minutes when we installed with nLite. Most of the savings came from not installing all the apps we use. I had nLite automatically installing a lot of stuff like, .net, hardware support apps, and A/V with multiple reboots until it was all completed. Now all the apps are installed on the image stored on the dvd. I know nLite is free but we were willing to pay for the cut in deployment time and administration.

Star Wars: The Old Republic Sarlacc Enforcer Class Unveiled 27

Today BioWare unveiled the most impressive new class yet seen for their upcoming MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic. Sarlacc Enforcers are "paragons of patience and planning, always waiting for the right moment to pounce on their quarry – even if it takes one thousand years." Gamespot had an interview with the game's developers to get a clear picture on how such a unique and innovative class was designed. Quoting: "Well, this is a stealth class, so the soloing experience of the Sarlacc enforcer is going to be a little slow. [This character] spends a lot of time slowly sneaking into position before unleashing potent close-ranged attacks, such as 'devour.' But once exposed, the enforcer heavily relies on companion characters to lure enemies close, so he/it can unleash his/its close-ranged attacks. However, the enforcer shines in a group, especially when paired with a Jedi consular that can knock enemies toward him. At this point, the Sarlacc enforcer can use his/its powerful suite of damage-over-time abilities, like 'digest' and 'regurgitate.'"

Study Finds That Video Games Hinder Learning In Young Boys 278

dcollins writes "Researchers at Denison University in Ohio have shown that giving PlayStations to young boys leads to slower progress in reading and writing skills. Quoting: 'The study is the first controlled trial to look at the effects of playing video games on learning in young boys. That is to say, the findings aren't based on survey data of kids' game habits, but instead on a specific group of children that were randomly assigned to receive a PlayStation or not ... Those with PlayStations also spent less time engaged in educational activities after school and showed less advancement in their reading and writing skills over time than the control group, according to tests taken by the kids. While the game-system owners didn't show significant behavioral problems, their teachers did report delays in learning academic skills, including writing and spelling.'"

EA Shuts Down Pandemic Studios, Cuts 200 Jobs 161

lbalbalba writes "Electronic Arts is shutting down its Westwood-based game developer Pandemic Studios just two years after acquiring it, putting nearly 200 people out of work. 'The struggling video game publisher informed employees Tuesday morning that it was closing the studio as part of a recently announced plan to eliminate 1,500 jobs, or 16% of its global workforce. Pandemic has about 220 employees, but an EA spokesman said that a core team, estimated by two people close to the studio to be about 25, will be integrated into the publisher's other Los Angeles studio, in Playa Vista.' An ex-developer for Pandemic attributed the studio's struggles to poor decisions from the management."

Actually the grades are created by the GAO in conjunction with each Department's Inspector General. They audit a cross section of the assessments submitted by the system owners for each Department. And by "audit" I mean they show up at the site with the report and go through a physical verification of all the details entered. Nothing makes a government Sysadmin's day like having an auditor shoulder surf while they go over server settings for 8 hours. I have been through it.
