Back in '99, my debit card was stolen by who I assume to be a postal worker since I never received it in the mail. They proceeded to rack up $300 at Wal-Mart and withdrew $200 without ever activating the card.

When I was 16, I got a call from Verizon saying that I owed them two hundred and some odd dollars for an over-due phone bill at an address two cities away. Someone had used my SSN to setup their account and Verizon never bothered to match up their information. In both cases, I wasn't liable since it was their fault for being negligent. What scares me is that they're probably just as negligent when it comes to protecting their legit records of my personal info.
