Comment Re:My experience with the USPS (Score 1) 155

Back in the 90's I had a computer store selling Atari stuff (yes, they had computers!) and we had to send an external hard drive to a customer vial APO to Saudi Arabia. The customer never got it. We had insured it so USPS did pay us for it. About a month later we got the package back and it looked like they had parked a jumbo jet on it. The metal case had been bent around the 3.5" hdd inside and you could see the shape through the sheet metal. The hdd's solid aluminum block had been cracked in multiple locations. They took care of us but I always wonder how it got like this. The labels on the outside were just fine so we could never figure out why it did not make it to where it was going.

Comment Split it (Score 1) 392

Split the "Federal Sales Tax" into 3 pieces. One for the feds, one for the state where the goods are going and one for where they shipped from. All the merchant would do is report the dollar amount collected each month/quarter etc and what ever the percentages the law covers would be handled by the agency managing it. The smallest portion should be for the feds to run that agency. It would then be up to the states to figure out what to do with that money. It beats what most of the states get now which is nothing. States that don't have a sales tax could opt out. This would fix the problem of the sending state getting shafted and the feds having to run it for free. Of course, the government being the way it is, this will get abused to no end. One thing that bugs me about the deal that amazon got is that a small business would not get the same because they are just not big enough.

Comment If they had more options (Score 1) 513

My wife has an iPhone and the one option I don't feel comfortable with jailbreaking it. Instead I would like to see an on-the-fly tethering option. Something like $20 and you can tether for 30 days or so. She goes out of town once or twice a year to her mother's. Her mother does not have internet access. I don't want to pay a recurring $20 charge and loose her unlimited plan just so she can use her laptop for 10 days a year. I wonder if any of the users who jailbroke their phone did it just for this type occasional use? More options means more people will follow the rules.

Comment Get your boss to wear them too (Score 2, Insightful) 837

I worked for a Mortgage company that had five front line IT people including my boss. He suggested that we get navy blue polo shirts for us with the company logo. They were nice ones (should have been dry cleaned but I am cheap) and even he wore one 4 days a week (he was the junior partner in the company.) I did not mind them since it also meant I did not have to figure out what to wear or buy work shirts. Even the sales types wanted them. The only complaint I had about them was that they did not get long sleeve ones for the winter. If it is done right it can work. Suggest that the head of the department get them as well.

Comment The trump card (Score 1) 121

If MS sees too many of their customers jump ship on SA then they will just come out with the next version that includes guaranteed upgrade rites to the next version even if it happens after the contract is over. Until then they will just laugh at all the suckers.
