Comment Seriously, people? (Score -1) 402

Siding with the amateurs? People need to get the fuck out of the way and let the real scientists do their jobs. If you're not doing anything important, get the fuck out of the way and let people with actual instrumentation work. Yes, I understand that everyone started somewhere. Yes, I understand that legally every licensed driver has the rights to the public roads. But really? Is looking at the pretty tornado so important that it's okay to get in the way of actual scientific research? No.

I've bought three BFG cards over the years. I figured "Oh cool, a pre-overclocked card. That'll save me a bit of effort". But all of them burned out in less than a week. I have excellent cooling, I had all of my settings correct, I didn't push the card any further than it was already clocked and temps really didn't seem that bad. But they all died on me. All of the cards I replaced them with lasted MUCH longer, and always gave me better performance after overclocking them myself. And honestly, they were just about on par with the BFG cards performance wise even BEFORE overclocking, at the same or lower price. Last card was the last chance for BFG in my eyes, I swore to never buy a card again. A few months later and they stop selling the cards? Coincidence? Probably, yeah. But still.

We go over there to give them aid, and they get mad because we weren't there sooner. When we actually are there, they shoot at us and steal our things. Yes, they had a natural disaster. It sucks. But why don't we divert some of this money we're sending to other nations into OUR home? There are people starving on our streets. There are kids without shoes in our communities. There are homeless people desperately scraping by. If we focused our efforts on OUR country, we'd be able to make sure everyone was well cared for. We have enough money and resources for ourselves, but when we try to play babysitter to the rest of the world, we get shafted. Selfish? Maybe. But sometimes you have to feed your own family first before you worry about the rest of the world.

Nobody should mess with nature on a large scale like that. Especially not russia, they're not exactly known for thinking things through properly. Who knows what sort of chain effect this sort of shit could set off? It's bad enough that we alter coastlines, pollute the air, alter tides, etc. Fucking with precipitation is just fucking irresponsible.

High-Speed Robot Hand Shows Dexterity and Speed 133

An anonymous reader tips a blog posting that begins "A few blogs are passing around videos of the Ishikawa Komuro Lab's high-speed robot hand performing impressive acts of dexterity and skillful manipulation. However, the video being passed around is slight on details. Meanwhile, their video presentation at ICRA 2009 (which took place in May in Kobe, Japan) has an informative narration and demonstrates additional capabilities. ... [It] shows the manipulator dribbling a ping-pong ball, spinning a pen, throwing a ball, tying knots, grasping a grain of rice with tweezers, and tossing / re-grasping a cellphone!"

It looks like he'll be dead soon anyway, then we can finally have a little less background noise. Unless you provide a service that people can't get anywhere else easily, give it to them free and make what you can from advertising. Maybe make a paid perks system, like an ad-free version of the site, or extra commentary, or SOMETHING unique and marketable. But to think that people won't go to another news site that they can access for free is just silly. Sure, you have idiots that can't use google, and you have diehard fans of his sites that will pay the money, but he's just limiting his audience here.

Major New Function Discovered For the Spleen 257

circletimessquare writes "The spleen doesn't get much respect — as one researcher put it, 'the spleen lacks the gravitas of neighboring organs.' Those undergoing a splenectomy seem to be able to carry on without any consequences. However, some studies have suggested an enhanced risk of early death for those who have undergone splenectomies. Now researchers have discovered why: the spleen apparently serves as a vast reservoir for monocytes, the largest of the white blood cells, the wrecking crew of the immune system. After major trauma, such as a heart attack, the monocytes are disgorged into the blood stream and immediately get to work repairing the damage. '"The parallel in military terms is a standing army," said Matthias Nahrendorf, an author of the report. "You don't want to have to recruit an entire fighting force from the ground up every time you need it."'"

Journal Journal: A Triumvirate of Tragedy 4

Today I found out that goatse.cx is to be taken down.

Later I came home, and decided to look at the FloodMT home page. I got wackily redirected. I tried to login to my Sourceforge account. I couldn't. FloodMT was now an "invalid project", and I was an invalid user. Sourceforge had assassinated the GNAA's software child.
