I'm not sure which city you're in, but I'm in Chicago - and the word 'tranny' is definitely a slur.

Maybe it doesn't seem that way from your perspective, but it is from most of ours.

Maybe I'm sensitive, but it's because I've been ridiculed, dismissed and attacked.

I transitioned in my twenties, and have lived and worked full time as a woman for over a decade in some very conservative work environments. The hormones did wonders, because even without any cosmetic surgery I don't think anyone here at work "knows" about my past, because if they did, it would get around pretty fast.

So, because I'm "stealth" I get to hear the nasty things that cis gendered people say about trans people. The gay jokes are pretty much unacceptable these days, but the jokes about trans... those still seem to be okay in a lot of people's minds. And that won't change until people speak up.

So I'm speaking up

Over sexualizing trans people is a slur.
Using the word 'tranny' is a slur.
Referring to a trans woman as 'he' is a slur.

These things aren't funny, they're threatening.

I have been the victim of violence because some assholes think that it's okay to make fun of women they suspect are trans. Someone using trans as a slur is _not_ funny, it perpetuates hate.

I started transitioning when I was 28, and now I'm 40 year old, 6' tall, 155 lb, trans woman with medium bone structure - definitely not "petite", and no plastic surgery (other than genital reassignment) and I get hit on by straight guys (and gay women) fairly often (although admittedly, not as much by guys as I did a few years ago).

Anyway - she probably meant that she was getting hit on by straight men, not gay men.

The way I heard that quote was, "Gender is what is between your ears and sex is what is between your legs."

yea, that's true - "transgender" is a rather big blanket, although among the people I know, ' trans woman' is usually short for ' transsexual woman' (non-op, pre-op, and post-op) rather than ' transgender woman'

Just to make sure - you do realize that queens and trans women aren't the same thing, right?

The joke is kind of funny and when Carlin told the joke he probably wasn't trying to be intentionally malicious.

But times change and what's considered acceptable in one context doesn't necessarily make it acceptable in another.

Hopefully we''ll all grow as society and people will start to treat each other with respect instead of lashing out with disparaging remarks in order to maintain the status quo - and in the words of Billy, "the status is NOT quo."
