Comment How is this news? (Score 1) 196

people have been doing this for years via XNA... that crappy indiana jones games is the demo platformer that comes with XNA and compiling for XBOX, Windows, or Zune is just a series of #ifndef XBOX blahblah #endif... save/resume files that work on all platforms isn't impressive: text files have worked on lots of platforms for a while now ;)

Freescale's Cheap Chip Could Mean Sub-$99 E-Readers 158

eldavojohn writes "Last week, Freescale Semiconductor announced their i.MX508 chip and a few days ago released a rather bland and boring announcement that it's available. But there was at least one interesting line from that press release, 'The i.MX508 applications processor is expected to be priced at less than $10 (USD) in quantities greater than 250K units.' Yes, less than ten dollars. This sparked a wave of articles detailing how this new chip will allow the sub-$99 e-reader to emerge and according to market research, consumers are thirsty for something much more affordable than the Kindle."

Comment Re:metamaterials are just periodic structures (Score 1) 113

calling metamaterials periodic structures is NOT tautological: a great many periodic structures (as in all most all of them) are not metamaterials, and metamaterials are created by repeating metalic small metalic structures close enough to each other that certain wavelengths of EM radiation see perfect magnetic conductors (which are the same as perfect electric conductors, but a quarter-wavelength away.) this required periodicity is inherently narrow-band, because only a select range of wavelengths will be subject to the quarter-wavelength condition. ...the long and short of it is that you don't get a cloak of invisibility, because metamaterials are just periodic structures and as such are very much narrow band.
