Comment Re:This is stupid. (Score 0) 140

I thought we understood that governments build infrastructure on the premise that we all benefit in one way or another. Roads, airports, shipping ports, military, etc.

But it will benefit everyone one way or another. I'll create one analogy to emphasize why it is important in just one way:

It allows people in very rural areas to make a living by selling produce to a global market. Likewise, it allows people to buy specialised produce from very rural areas. This then encourages better postage systems in rural areas, that allows people with distant relative to communicate with each other via snail mail.

Better internet = better niche products from local areas (think jam, honey, etc) = better postal services = better community. And that's just one example. This is a monumental step forward for Britain - I should know, I live in the middle of nowhere in Scotland, but I live in the Scottish belt. My friends up in the very north must be so isolated from all the involvement even I have through the internet. Is there any wonder so many people are moving into th city? I'm rambling now, but this could even help (not majorly - I appreciate that) in slowing the growth of cities, as it presents more job opportunities for rural people.

Will Adobe Sue Apple Over Flash? 980

An anonymous reader writes "Apple's iron-bound determination to keep Adobe Flash out of any iWhatever device is about to blow up in Apple's face. Sources close to Adobe tell me that Adobe will be suing Apple within a few weeks."

The 1 Terabyte SSD Arrives 237

An anonymous reader writes "Over recent years Solid State Drives (SSDs) have moved from luxury to affordable additions to one's PC, but mechanical hard drives are still king when it comes to capacity. That was until the revamped Colossus LT series Solid State Drive came along this week. With up to 1TB, the drive offers offers massive storage capacities of the level normally not seen in SSDs. While 1TB of SSD space hits right at the heart of the traditional hard disk market, it comes at a high price — at around $4,000 for the 1TB model, these drives are in the realm of aspirational rather than practical."

Google to Open Source the VP8 Codec 501

Several readers noted Google's reported intention to open source the VP8 codec it acquired with On2 last February — as the FSF had urged. "HTML5 has the potential to capture the online video market from Flash by providing an open standard for web video — but only if everyone can agree on a codec. So far Adobe and Microsoft support H.264 because of the video quality, while Mozilla has been backing Ogg Theora because it's open source. Now it looks like Google might be able to end the squabble by making the VP8 codec it bought from On2 Technologies open source and giving everyone what they want: high-quality encoding that also happens to be open. Sure, Chrome and Firefox will support it. But can Google get Safari and IE on board?"
