Hydrogen peroxide powered rocket packs fly for around 30 seconds, because they have a specific impulse of around 125, meaning that one pound of propellant can make 125 pound-seconds of thrust, meaning that it takes about two pounds of propellant for every second you are in the air. Mass ratios are low for anything strapped to a human, so the exponential nature of the rocket equation can be safely ignored.

A pretty hot (both literally and figuratively) bipropellant rocket could manage about twice the specific impulse, and you could carry somewhat heavier tanks, but two minutes of flight on a rocket pack is probably about the upper limit with conventional propellants.

However, an actual jet pack that used atmospheric oxygen could have an Isp ten times higher, allowing theoretical flights of fifteen minutes or so. Here, it really is a matter of technical development, since jet engines have thrust to weight ratios too low to make it practical. There is movement on this technical front, but it will still take a while.

Carmack Considers Cell Phone MMOG 78

fistfullast33l writes "John Carmack's new cell phone game Orcs and Elves, which debuted at E3 to some fanfare, has led the famous developer to think about expanding his mobile gaming presence. Carmack said in an interview with CNN that he is interested in a massively multiplayer sequel. 'I have absolutely no interest in going and competing with Blizzard in the high end of that market, but a cell phone version might be interesting,' Carmack is quoted as saying. Even more interesting is his comment in the interview that game engines really overlook security. The article indirectly quotes him as saying 'while id Software is especially careful to lock down its game engines, companies that license and make changes to those engines often aren't as focused, which could open the door to disaster.'"

I want to know where the problem with the "social degradation" really lies. Is it the medias influence on society? Or, is it society's influence on the media? Not being alive in the 60s, I'm pretty sure that 99% of the media was "clean" and "proper", yet there was an extreme hippie/free love/drug movement. There was no NYPD Blue or Real Sex on TV at that time. Did Howard Stern contribute to the amount of sex in the Media? Or was it the relaxation of taboos between regular people that made him so popular? Rather than putting the restrictions on cable and satellite that may not work at all, causing people like Howard Stern, Opie and Anthony and hundreds of comedians to loose their jobs, the politicians should look at society's influence on each other and try to teach parents/children right and wrong rather than censoring media that might have little to no effect on society.
