Before anybody responded to this flamebait, responsible /. readers should have asked who was writing the article. Who is the person who wrote this article, and what agenda could she possibly have? What I mean is, if working for a magazine funded by the IT community (see: the guys that pay IT wages), what would the result of writing an article that said IT employees "had it good" already and were not valuable commodities?

Here are Ericka Chickowski's last 5 articles:

Anybody else see a theme?

If I was a large corporation, and I believed bad times were ahead (given the state of the economy), the first thing I'd do is try to curb new-hires' salary expectations by getting the propaganda machine to churn out some nonsense like the items above.

The fact is, the software developers are the company. Managers, PMs, Human Resources and CEOs like to think they make the world turn, but without developers, they have nothing to sell.

I don't know about you guys, but if I was confident in my skills as a coder/developer/integrator, her article would make laugh.

Feed Engadget: Nikon D3 full frame DSLR unboxed (engadget.com)

So it looks like the first lucky individuals have started receiving their Nikon D3s in the mail -- lucky not just because they're the proud new owner of a 12.1 megapixel full frame DSLR with 6400 ISO, 51-point autofocus, two CF slots, HDMI, and a 3-inch live view LCD, but lucky because, you know, they can afford to spend $5,000 on a camera. For those of us who can only aspire to possess such luxuries, there are always a bunch of nice unboxing shots to really help flesh out our weird gadget fantasies. You can check out another such pic after the break, before hitting the Read link for an entire D3 gallery including a few images of those new AF-S NIKKOR lenses...

[Thanks, Andrew]

Feed Techdirt: MPAA Takes University Toolkit Offline For GPL Violation (techdirt.com)

Remember last week how the MPAA was pushing a ridiculous toolkit on universities that was officially supposed to help universities track network usage, but also had the side-effect of potentially exposing all sorts of private info? Well, some folks noticed that the toolkit was built on open source technologies, such as Ubuntu Linux, though the MPAA (irony alert) didn't appear to be abiding by the GPL license associated with the software. It didn't take long for an Ubuntu developer to send a takedown notice, forcing the university to remove the toolkit. The developer contacted the MPAA concerning the violations, and found that the group ignored him (shocking, I know, for a group that claims it's such a huge supporter of intellectual property rights). So, he was forced to go to the ISP hosting the content, which finally resulted in the MPAA pulling the software down. This isn't the first time, by the way, that the MPAA has decided that it was okay to ignore intellectual property rules when it suits the organization, but it does suggest that for all its talk of having a principled stand on the issue, it's all a bunch of hogwash.
