Yikes, you were one of the guys that hammered my gateway.
I operated a fidonetusenet gateway in the Houston area around 1990-1992. I pulled a nearly complete newsfeed from the University of Houston (no binaries) and distributed them to fidonet nodes in the area. It was quite a challenge. I had no users directly on my "bbs" -- I just did the gatewaying for others.
I was running 2 9600bps modems, a 386-40 with 4mb of ram, and a about 100mb of RLL disk. At first I was running DesqView, then did a quick fling with DesqView/X and finally switched to OS/2. I'd regularly steal one of the lines to play Tradewars and Risk.
A full feed wasn't all that large at the time. But those people that did ftp-by-mail really hosed my system.
