iMode is completely independant of the network structure. Any 2.5G network will work. iMode is currently running on the NTT 2.5G PDC network and will run great on GSM/PCS/CDMA. iMode is doing well in Japan for three reasons. 1. The content is outstanding. 2. The average Japanese commuter spends 1 to 2 hours a day on the trains where it is not culturally acceptable to talk on your phone, so everyone uses iMode during their commute. 3. Japan has a very low number of internet connected PCs in homes, but 50 million iMode, JSky, and ezWeb (iMode competitors) capable phones.

I'm an American MBA currently studying in Japan and I've just finished a strategy project with DoCoMo's 3G service FOMA. No one outside of Japan can even begin to imagine how advanced the phones and services are. The big question is whether or not US users will use the services, as most Americans drive to work and iMode is targeted at filling the 'dead time' during peoples' commute and other waiting times, like the doctors office.
