rtgarden's Journal: olpc xo laptop

This entry is created on my xo OLPC G1G1 which I call 'Lappy". There are several things about this design which are worth noting. You may already know about the amazing display which can be read in full sunlight, did you also know that it is silent? There is a very quiet noise from keystroking and of course it can make sounds however it is charming and silent overall. It is very unobtrusive and fits in well with the surroundings without creating any sound pollution. It is also really truly possible to use one on your lap, since the parts which create heat are up being vented as part of the screen unit.

It is about as heavy as a regular book, except that the handle makes it much easier to carry. Since it is made for rugged conditions and to be used by children it does not suck dust under the keyboard like every other keyboard I own. This is important since I live in rugged conditions and I am disabled.

Overall it is surprisingly fast and very agile. I am excited at the prospect of a similar machine perhaps also with a touch screen and stylus option. This machine can bring great enrichment,literacy and comfort to the lives of children worldwide especially children living in hospitals and orphanages. In an era where we face famine, epidemic, deforestation and war it is imperative that we reach the worlds vast populations with these devices as quickly as possible in order to discover what genius we need to face these tremendous challenges.
