The reason you buy a hybrid is to guarantee a market for high efficiency vehicles which will, with each succeeding generation, get cheaper and more efficient. Whereas gasoline will just continue to rise in price. So, in fact, this is an investment in energy savings for the long haul. The government could just come in and slap 3 dollar a gallon tax on fuel which would be another way of forcing people into hybrids, but wouldn't it just be better to do the right thing?
