linux will not fade precisely for the reasons it has garnered the attention it has now -> it is a better product that tech-savvy (curious to programmers) people want to play with. The more important question is whether or not enough simple applications for end-users (the reasons you list that make M$ popular) will be created fast enough to start displacing M$ on corporate desktops before Wall-Street types (who want to disparage anything non-M$ or riding a "business model" they don't like or understand) can find serious faults and blithely write off our penguinOS. Right now linux has momentum for all the right reasons - we should take care that linux doesn't lose momentum for any wrong reasons.
