I would like to find a way we could leverage an agency like the NTSB to push auto manufacturers to make reusable cars like the Volga or the Corvair a thing again. Nobody needs a new car every year. A committee to create an open source engine with a few different body styles and price tiers would ensure the manufacturers couldn't build planned obscelescence into their models, freeing up all sorts of money for the consumer.

Actually, they do still oppose right to repair. All this means is they are now authorizing other people than the repair centers to actually do the repair. If you buy a Deere tractor, you are guaranteed to have to pay $100,000 for a capacitor for your $5,000,000 tractor. You can't just replace the capacitor, so you have to replace the circuit board. Now you can walk up to the service counter and maybe beg for the part. And they might give it to you if it is in stock, but the sales tax alone is going to be more than it would cost to put your kids in school, so you might as well just take it back to the service center and let them handle it.

When I was visiting the US a few years ago, I was astonished to find a farmer still using an old Belarus brand tractor produced in the USSR. It was a no frills tractor and was very reliable The farmer had to do a lot of work to it, but it kept running for nearly half a century. You can still even order parts for it. Where will that John Deere tractor be in 50 years?
