Even if AI becomes smarter than humans, it cannot become a threat given it has no reason to evolve into that. Our own impulses are driven by evolutionary pressure. Models are under evolutionary pressure to become better at following instructions.

There is no independent evolution of models that would allow them to exist and grow independently. They also lack the machinery to gather their own resources.

Perhaps one day AI could be self sustaining, but it will not be during our lifetimes.

I really think the United States should not be able to impose this kind of regulation on foreign entities.

It should be illegal, mind you, but it's probably something that should be enforced under the law of Switzerland or Panama.

If they don't have such laws, this would be a good wake up to get them, but the United States should not be the world's police for actions that don't directly injure US citizens.

I think studies like this are VERY misleading.

Often higher blood markers of various chemicals are a result of poor kidney or liver function which leads to all sorts of problems and health issues.

Blood levels of chemical X should almost NEVER be used as a warning sign that said chemical is inherently dangerous. However, it could be used as a starting point for research.

What matters is if consumption of said chemical increases risks. It might be that the chemical is completely harmless, but impaired liver or kidney function leads to its accumulation.

We went through this with cholesterol. Remember the egg scare? It turns out dietary cholesterol has basically no effect on mortality and it's basically just an indicator of liver health and how well the liver manages cholesterol levels.

Any study of this type should be immediately suspect, although it might be good to do causative studies and trials where we modify people's diets. Otherwise we also risk a repeat of the sodium debacle (turns out dietary sodium below a certain level around 3g/day increases risks rather than decreases them).

Supreme Court already held that Cell Phone searches require a warrant. So this seems unlikely to have been a constitutional warrantless search. That makes destroying evidence a weak argument, he didn't destroy any evidence they had any legal basis to look at, since cell phones require a warrant and he didn't have one. The usual rule that border searches don't require a warrant, I don't think the recent cell phone ruling will have an exception added for the border search rule, but that can be litigated.

I think him wiping the device is reasonable if he wasn't able to go free and wasn't given the lawyer.

If I was the judge, I would bar the government from prosecuting him because he was held without a lawyer for an extended period of time.

Like I mentioned, they need a better PinePhone. The excuse Pine64 gave for not making a real premium PinePhone Pro is that if it was expensive "nobody would buy it".

In reality, there are lots of people who would gladly pay a premium for a Linux OS phone, who don't buy and use a PinePhone because it's a dated piece of low quality e-Waste.

The closest thing we have to a quality Linux phone right now is the FLX1s+ and that's still low mid-range at best. At least it's usable.

You are making up bullshit. If you read the post, Pine64 did not say they could not get parts. They specifically talked about the prices as being the reason.

I can go buy the specific components, DRAM and eMMC on NewEgg, mouser, digikey etc. if I want to right now. The prices are high, but they are available. Pine64 made a conscious choice to discontinue the product instead of maintaining stock at market prices.

I've known pine64 was a joke for a while, but they really just shut down production? You should be able to keep products in stock if you raise the prices. If they choose not to, they aren't doing business, they are protesting component costs. In reality, pine64 has not been driven by market forces for some time, they reliably have stock outs and dont properly use pricing to manage stock or moderate demand. They also refuse to make a better pinephone despite there being market demand for it. I'm not sure what Pine64 is, but I'd consider it more of a religion than a company.

If "successful" means importing high income people in large numbers to drive up housing costs, while not importing tradesmen, yes. H1B and similar visas are a terrible idea once you realize what they do to the native population. By importing only the most skilled tech people you drive up labor costs, put pressure on housing, and worsen income inequality all while draining wealth from the host country as the immigrants send portions of their income to foreign family members. The idea that a country will become rich by importing highly skilled workers is a myth. We don't need to be importing migrants during a housing shortage. And what has Sundar done for the USA? Cut wages, layoffs, and "improved shareholder value" whilst making the world a worse place for regular Americans who aren't invested in Google stock. Microsoft has faltered, while contributing to a AI bubble and squeezing ads into Windows, invaded people's privacy, driving up RAM prices through shady investments. I can see why this isn't "successful" but rather an abject Failure. Creating high income households for foreigners at the expense of citizens isn't and should never be the goal. That is what has happened though, and this arrangement never benefitted average Americans.
