It is related to driving on the right side.
When going in a circle, people instinctively consider they are going around something dangerous (fire, lake, hole). If you walk clockwise, then when you meet someone, naturally, they would pass on your left and they could push you inside the danger area.
If you walk counter clockwise, then when you meet someone, you are on the exterior and safe.
This also accounts why in Australia the direction is reversed and also why if there are multiple people they tend to follow this behavior.
