Genre Wars — the Downside of the RPG Takeover 248

Phaethon360 writes "From Bioshock and Modern Warfare 2 to even Team Fortress 2, RPG elements are creeping into game genres that we never imagined they would. This change for the most part has managed to subtly improve upon genres that needed new life, but there's a cost that hasn't been tallied by the majority of game developers. 'The simple act of removing mod tools, along with the much discussed dedicated server issue, has made [MW2] a bit of a joke among competitive players. Gone are the days of "promod," and the only option you have is to play it their way. If Infinity Ward are so insistent on improving the variety of our experiences, they don’t have to do it at the expense of the experience that many of us already love. It really is that simple. If they don’t want to provide a good "back to basics experience," they could at least continue to provide the tools that allow us to do that for ourselves.'"

Journal Journal: May the fittest survive 1

Surely our planet is now populated with more than enough human beings.
Why then spend so much time and effort trying to extend people's lives?
By artificially keeping people alive longer than nature intended, are we not poisoning the human gene pool?
Would it not be wiser to employ medical and health strategies that are conducive to a strengthened gene pool?
I picture a future of smelly, semi-translucent, fat, blob-like humans encapsulated in technology and dreaming of

Guitarist Hopes To Play Again With The Help of Bionic Hand 72

Dorian Cox, the 27-year-old guitarist of the indie band The Long Blondes, thought his guitar playing days were over after he suffered a stroke. He now has a glimmer of hope thanks to some neurological physiotherapy which includes a cutting-edge piece of medical technology. The SaeboFlex helps patients by supporting their wrists and helping them grasp and release objects. "It's a fantastic service, it's helping tremendously and I think it can work wonders for me and others — it's almost like a gym for my hand. I know things might never be the same again and nobody can give me a definite answer about whether I'll play guitar again but I'm getting back on track with their help," Mr. Cox said. This thing looks really cool, and I'm sure many people will benefit from it, though I can't help but wonder if they make a model that lets you shoot your fist at an enemy.

Journal Journal: CIA lurking behind Facebook

Perhaps I am too paranoid and/or cynical, but I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who thinks that social networking sites such as 'Spacebook' and 'MyFace' were really set up for the benefit of agencies like the CIA or NSA. Of course really bad people would presumably avoid such social webs like the plague but that aint gonna stop the authorities snooping on Joe Soap's list of friends, especially when one of them was flagged on some list for buying Das Kapital.

Computer For a Child? 556

jameswing writes "I am thinking of buying a UMPC, such as an Eee PC or a Wind for my son, and wanted to get input from Slashdot. He is almost 2 and really curious about our computers, and anything electronic. I want to foster this in him, without having him on my desktop or laptop. I also don't really like the idea of getting one of those cheap 'Learning Laptops' that have a tiny screen and are really limited. Does anybody have one that they use with their children? How sturdy is it? Will it stand up to a 2-year-old? If not, what are good alternatives? What are your thoughts? Suggestions?"
