In many countries, the law forces both the employer and the employee to give a minimum of 15 (or 20) working days notice before terminating the contract - in this way the company will have time to find a replacement, and the employee time to find a new job..
Not doing this can have serious consequences for both parties - the employee might loose his last paycheck and have a permanent 'mark' in his work contact history (that is accessible for any new employer), while the company might face more serious consequences ..
