Submission + - Flexible, Plastic Sheets of Power

bethr writes: Imagine never having to plug in an electronic device to get power? Researchers at the University of Tokyo have demonstrated prototype plastic sheets with copper coils that wirelessly supply power to any device that touches its surface. You just put down your laptop and the pad sends it power: "An array of organic transistors that detect the position of the gadget and direct current flow." Apparently, the researchers had enough time to create a spiffy video of their doll house model, complete with a mini Christmas tree, showing off the technology (see the Multimedia link on the Technology Review article for the video).

Submission + - Facing the Dangers of Nanotech

bethr writes: Technology Review has an Q&A with Andrew Maynard, the science advisor for the Woodrow Wilson International Center's nanotechnology project regarding the dangers of nanomaterials and why we have to act now. From the article: "You could imagine 10 to 20 years from now. You're developing a new nanotechnology material. You have absolutely no idea whether it's going to be safe or harmful. What if you had a little sensor that you could put on your body that began to flash if there was a possibility of having a hazardous exposure?"

Submission + - Animatronic Clothes: How they work

bethr writes: "TechnologyReview.com has an article about the inner-workings of the animatronic clothes featured at a recent Paris runway show. The dresses use computerized motors and monofilament wires to radically transform from one style to another. From the article: "Zippers closed, cloth gathered, and hemlines rose — all without human assistance." You can see the finished product in the second half of this video."
