As an engineer who does alot of development, I tend to prefer matlab. It has a lot of power, and it has libraries that rely on Mathematica and Maple, so you have the functionality of those as well.
Real Programs don't use shared text. Otherwise, how can they use functions for scratch space after they are finished calling them?
