Steam For Linux Is Now an Open Beta 353

New submitter jotaass writes "In news that is guaranteed to make the Linux gaming community (in particular, but not exclusively) excited, Valve has just announced that the Steam for Linux client Beta is now open to the public. A .deb package is available here. Interesting as well, they are using an empty GitHub repository solely as an issue tracker, open for anyone to submit, edit and track bugs, with no actual code in the repo."

Comment What about free speech? (Score 1) 307

Another obvious thing would be that any insults by the arrestee recorded automatically results in a fine for each if brought to court. People need to respect the police if they expect the police to respect them, and step one is to talk politely and avoid profanity. A fine of $50 for each insult recorded would be reasonable and the fine must be paid in full within 14 days. No extension and no payment plan. This ensures that it will be felt and thus hopefully make people think before they insult.

That would have a chilling effect on a person's freedom of speech. After all, if I want to (unwisely) give a police officer a recommendation as to what they can do to themselves, that is my prerogative and right, however unwise, rude, and foolish it may be to do so. Furthermore, who gets to decide what an "insult" is? Is it raising your hand in a certain way and asking them to "read between the lines" or is it asking them why they are asking to search you or your property?

I'd personally like to see the hard figures that Pandora is drawing these numbers from so that I can reach my own conclusions rather than be sheepishly led to a conclusion that obviously benefits Pandora. Furthermore, I'd like to see some basic statistical information on their payment rates to artists, including the mean, median, mode, and standard deviation. Then we could cross-reference those figures with what the average "big label" artist makes in royalties and we'd be left with a solid idea as to how "good for artists" Pandora really is.

Food Bank Gets Phelps-Labeled Cereal 3

San Francisco Food Bank officials say they recently received a donation from Kellogg Co. of thousands of boxes of breakfast cereal, all with Olympic athlete Michael Phelps' face on the front. Kellogg decided not to renew Phelps' contract after his picture was taken with a pot pipe. Food bank executive director Paul Ash says he doesn't know specifically why the Phelps cereal was donated. Hopefully, the hungry people that this cereal is going to feed will be strong enough to resist the picture of Phelps, and the heavy drug use it causes, unlike the youth of America.

Chimp Found Plotting Against Zoo Guests 435

rjshirts writes "In further proof that Planet of the Apes is coming to pass, researchers in Stockholm, Sweden have proof that primates can plan ahead. From the article: 'Santino the chimpanzee's anti-social behavior stunned both visitors and keepers at the Furuvik Zoo but fascinated researchers because it was so carefully prepared. According to a report in the journal Current Biology, the 31-year-old alpha male started building his weapons cache in the morning before the zoo opened, collecting rocks and knocking out disks from concrete boulders inside his enclosure. He waited until around midday before he unleashed a "hailstorm" of rocks against visitors, the study said.'"
