PS3 Hacked? 296

Several readers have sent word that George Hotz (a.k.a. geohot), the hacker best known for unlocking Apple's iPhone, says he has now hacked the PlayStation 3. From his blog post: "I have read/write access to the entire system memory, and HV level access to the processor. In other words, I have hacked the PS3. The rest is just software. And reversing. I have a lot of reversing ahead of me, as I now have dumps of LV0 and LV1. I've also dumped the NAND without removing it or a modchip. 3 years, 2 months, 11 days...that's a pretty secure system. ... As far as the exploit goes, I'm not revealing it yet. The theory isn't really patchable, but they can make implementations much harder. Also, for obvious reasons I can't post dumps. I'm hoping to find the decryption keys and post them, but they may be embedded in hardware. Hopefully keys are setup like the iPhone's KBAG."

Windows allows devs to make stupid apps that don't conform, but if a dev wants to make a shitty app they should be allowed to. Easily confused people might need the exact same thing in the exact same place in every program, but there's no helping some people.

Here is my beef though.. Microsoft think it's cool to issue a load of GUI design guidlelines and then ... completely ignore them for their own apps !! This is to make them look unique and cool, but all it does is incentivise (?) all 3rd party devs to think "well hey *we* need to stand out as well, so *we* won't stick to the guidelines". It's like the prisoners dilemna, if you both "follow the rules" (ie don't grass) then you get out in 1 year... but if one of you decides to stitch up the other (ie make an "improved" GUI) you get out now (ie "look better to the public") !

That was a very insightful read. Although it was "obvious" from their public intentions and statements, it does help to read something like your post to identify exactly where they are going. I'm developing a game for the Android platform and the amount of support and stuff needed from google to just get it done is phenomenal ... and now I know the intention above it all makes sense.. Google will make $$$ from sales of the game .. so make it as easy as possible for people to write stuff - more cash for me is more cash for them.... I hope you don't get into trouble with your marketing department for your post though. I think it's very positive for the company as a whole.

I've been looking for a out of the box UAV project for some time now (or in fact just a land or water based one). The best I can find so far is : "paparazzi" at http://paparazzi.enac.fr/wiki/Main_Page - but it's still quite a bit of work to plug all the bits together (and right now I have very little spare tinkering time). Anybody got any other options ??

Boone Pickens said Tuesday, and he's looking for a home for 687 giant wind turbines. Pickens has already ordered the turbines, which can stand 400 feet tall — taller than most 30-story buildings. 'When I start receiving those turbines, I've got to ... like I said, my garage won't hold them,' the legendary Texas oilman said. 'They've got to go someplace.' Pickens' company Mesa Power ordered the turbines from General Electric Co. — a $2 billion investment — a little more than a year ago. Pickens said he has leases on about 200,000 acres in Texas that were planned for the project, and he might place some of the turbines there, but he's also looking for smaller wind projects to participate in."

Up until this week, they were forced to hire wholesale service from the State run telco, Copaco. During the last month, when the new regulation was almost ready, the real reason supporting the monopoly made it to the headlines: Copaco would fight for the monopoly, fearing VoIP based telephony. Finally, the regulator Conatel resolved today to end the monopoly, but a ruling on VoIP legal status was postponed for 'further study.' I guess this kind of 'problem' arose almost everywhere else in the world, so I ask the international slashdotters crowd: what is VoIP's legal status in your country / state / region? How well did incumbent telcos adapt to it, and overall, just how disruptive was this technology to established operators?"

I have a collection of photographs. Not to go into too much detail, but they are good pics and are of me and a group of people from a few years back. I gave each member of that group a copy of those pics. One of them has now posted the best of those pics on his facebook account...

What happens next ?? If facebook decide to use them, do I have to "sue" facebook who will then countersue my friend has he didn't have license to publish them in the first place ?

Valve Discusses Team Fortress 2's Future 135

The Escapist chatted with Valve's Robin Walker about how the Team Fortress 2 team has been listening to feedback and continually updating the game to fix problems and add to the gameplay experience. Walker mentions that ideas for new classes are "floating around," and that a new mode of play will be introduced soon. "'Players have driven our entire approach to designing achievements, the way we tie unlockables to those achievements and the design of those new weapons themselves. The choices we made within the Medic and Heavy updates were very much the result of the ways that players have used that combination of classes within the game. The addition of the payload game mode came from players requesting an old Team Fortress Classic map called Hunted, and describing what they did and didn't like in that map.' ... The Scout is the next class slated for the special treatment, and Walker expects the update will be available early this year. Additionally, the team is juggling a number of side projects at the moment, including finally bringing a year's worth of the downloadable content and upgrades to the Xbox 360 version of the game. A new Payload map is in the works, more community maps are on the way and the team will soon unveil a very different new game mode."
