The "wiring" you are talking about is a basic property of an AC distribution network - you get at least 2 (usually three) phase shifted hot wires into the building, and either get a 4th ground wire or supply your own. The voltage between any of the hot wires is 240v (just like it is 480v in Europe). By the way I am sure you have seen heavy duty 220v stoves that require 3-phase AC electricity to run. Guess what - the same stoves run at 480 in an average European home (I have one).

Could you elaborate on the "you generally never have to type a WPA key" bit? I am genuinely interested in how to setup a no-touch-password credential distribution system. Reading links most welcome (superfluous googling didn't help much).
