Comment Tech Crunch lives in its own world? (Score 1) 135

The post said TechCrunch called these "a clutch of the company's largest celebrities, with a collective audience of some 47 million viewers... Snoop Dogg, The Weeknd, Marshmello, Lil Wayne, Juice WRLD, Young Thug, Kendrick Lamar, Baron Davis, Tyga, TI, Jake Paul and Troy Carter..." I posted that list on Facebook. No one had heard of any of them except Dogg. It's far more probable the "collective audience" is counting the same people in audience after audience including the faux fan clubs created by bots.

Comment Such obvious fake data (Score 1) 58

Article says "According to the data, the average U.S. household contains 17 smart devices ..." meaning devices connected to the internet. Come now. The closest ridiculous exaggeration I've read was when the Consumer Reports magazine stated that the average person uses a roll of toilet paper in 3 1/2 days. Lies, damn lies, and statistics mis-interpreted.

Comment How this works in reality (Score 1) 555

They screw this up every time because any system that relies on humans, eventually screws up. Or screws up from the git-go like our local fire company's land line telephone alert system. I learned they had one when my wife got a call in her hospital room at 10 pm with a recorded message saying be on the lookout for a lost child last seen 10 miles from town. Morons get positions of authority and decision-making across the board. That one had to publicly apologize and got demoted. Yes, I expect a call from the White House advertising the newest vintage from the Trump Winery. By coincidence it's located near where that child was last seen.

Comment YOU can run a BBS today (Score 1) 181

At the Freeware Hall of Fame web site, formerly a BBS, we have available for free download two versions of PCBoard, one of the most successful and popular BBS platforms. http://www.freewarehof.org/olh... is where to find that and "Door" programs useful on a BBS. We also have a lot to say about life in the BBS days and hints for running a good board. The FHOF BBS was named one of the country's top 25 boards by Boardwatch magazine. More can be read here: http://www.freewarehof.org/hom... . Caveat: PCBoard is a DOS platform, though it can be made to run in Windows, (Not by me.)

Submission + - DOS Freeware (freewarehof.org)

reybo writes: Younger FreeDOS users may not know of the Freeware Hall of Fame, a source of old DOS freeware some of which is on-line 24/7 at www.freewarehof.org .

This file base of free programs was begun in 1984 to help small businesses enter the world of computers. It became an international file base distributed to BBSs around the world via floppy disc until Bobbie Sumrada in Memphis gave it a home on CHEERS, her premier BBS. The entire history is on the FreeHOF web site.

Also there are downloadable copies of PCBoard, one of the great BBS platforms of all time. Anyone can create a dial-up BBS with this to see what they were like, so long as they have a DOS partition for it. I think MS DOS is also there to download, version 5.n or 6.n.

Something you won't find at this site is games. FHOF never distributed games.
