repruhsent's Journal: Slashdot - News about Google; Shit that Doesn't Matter

If you look at the left side of your browser window, you'll see the Slashdot "Sections" pane (assholes like Taco probably call it something else - I think the term is "slashbox" - but whatever). You can pick whatever you'd like to read stupid stories about. Current sections include Apple, BSD, whatever.

Now, one doesn't have to read too many stories here to see that there's something horribly wrong with the "Sections" pane as is. Specifically, some sections get hardly any stories compared to others.

Take, for example, the YRO section. It seems that there's at least a couple of stories each day about "Your Rights Online," most of which are an alarmist stance on something that really doesn't matter. I did a little browsing just now and found a story about how no one thinks there's a reason to deploy XP N, that WinXP version sans Windows Media Player. Wow, that's informative. I'm sure that's a big shocker to everyone here as well, since 99.9% of the readership here believes that Linux should be installed on every computer on the planet.

Compare YRO to another section - say, the BSD section. Lately, there have been a few BSD stories posted, but it doesn't take a mathematician to see that there are sometimes gaps of weeks between stories in the BSD section. Apache is another one of these "ghost town" sections. To an extent, so is the "Interviews" section. Actually, "Interviews" is still probably reeling from that interview with mc chris (or whatever the fuck his name is) a few months back. I thought a few of the questions about "open source music" were very high in the LOL department, but I'm getting off track here.

My question for readers of this wonderful journal is, why doesn't Slashdot have a Google section? Google seems just as relevant to Internet culture as Apache, and a good 10 - 25% of the stories on Slashdot anymore are about the search engine/company (this is a very unscientific guesstimate).

Oh well, just my two cents. I think Taco/Cowboi/et al are just retarded.
