Scientists Create Artificial Meat 820

Hugh Pickens writes "The Telegraph reports that scientists have created the first artificial meat by extracting cells from the muscle of a live pig and putting them in a broth of other animal products where the cells then multiplied to create muscle tissue. Described as soggy pork, researchers believe that it can be turned into something like steak if they can find a way to 'exercise' the muscle and while no one has yet tasted the artificial meat, researchers believe the breakthrough could lead to sausages and other processed products being made from laboratory meat in as little as five years' time. '"What we have at the moment is rather like wasted muscle tissue. We need to find ways of improving it by training it and stretching it, but we will get there," says Mark Post, professor of physiology at Eindhoven University. "You could take the meat from one animal and create the volume of meat previously provided by a million animals." Animal rights group Peta has welcomed the laboratory-grown meat, announcing that "as far as we're concerned, if meat is no longer a piece of a dead animal there's no ethical objection while the Vegetarian Society remained skeptical. "The big question is how could you guarantee you were eating artificial flesh rather than flesh from an animal that had been slaughtered. It would be very difficult to label and identify in a way that people would trust.""

Google Analytics May Be Illegal In Germany 241

sopssa sends in a TechCrunch story that begins "Several federal and regional government officials in Germany are trying to put a ban on Google Analytics, the search giant's free software product that allows website owners and publishers to get detailed statistics about the number, whereabouts, and search behavior of their visitors (and much more)." Here's Google's translation of the article from Zeit Online (original in German). A German lawyer cited there says that penalties for websites that uses Google Analytics could amount to €50,000 (about $75,000). Reader sopssa adds, "The amount of data Google collects from everywhere on the Internet is indeed huge, and website owners should be using a local open source alternative to keep visitor data private."

Scientists Say a Dirty Child Is a Healthy Child 331

Researchers from the School of Medicine at the University of California have shown that the more germs a child is exposed to, the better their immune system in later life. Their study found that keeping a child's skin too clean impaired the skin's ability to heal itself. From the article: "'These germs are actually good for us,' said Professor Richard Gallo, who led the research. Common bacterial species, known as staphylococci, which can cause inflammation when under the skin, are 'good bacteria' when on the surface, where they can reduce inflammation."

This is only true in America. I have never heard anyone refer to a tissue as a "Kleenex" here in Australia, yet I heard it all the time when I lived in America. Same goes for the Coke thing. I just don't understand that one... You're not drinking coke, you're drinking a poor imitator or some other soft drink entirely. Oh yes... Soft drink = Pop / Soda / Soda-pop or whatever you want to call it here. No one says "I'm drinking a soft drink" though, they say the brand name or generic type, i.e. Sprite, 7-Up, Kirk's... as "Lemonade". The same goes for Xerox. You copy something here. You don't Xerox it! Silly Americans.

One may think she was working on the refreshments. Perhaps Pepsi should learn more about Spamhaus case.

Do what I do... get some poundin' beats happening and just dance away at home to them. The neighbours might not fully appreciate your choice of music, but stuff 'em! If you're not into that, could always go to a rave / dance club and dance away. I also walk to and from work every day and own a bike which I take out on weekends.
