Submission + - Better free disk space monitoring?

relliker writes: In the olden days, when monitoring a file system of a few 100 MB, we would be alerted when it topped 90% or more, with 95% a lot of times considered quite critical. Today, however, with a lot of file systems in the Terabyte range, a 90-95% full file system can still have a considerable amount of free space but we still mostly get bugged by the same alerts as in the days of yore when there really isn't a cause for immediate concern. Apart from increasing thresholds and/or starting to monitor actual free space left instead of a percentage, should it be time for monitoring systems to become a bit more intelligent by taking space usage trends and heuristics into account too and only warn about critical usage when projected thresholds are exceeded? I’d like my system to warn me with something like, “Hey!, you’ll be running out of space in a couple of months if you go on like this!” Or is this already the norm and I’m still living in a digital cave?

Submission + - SCiB. Is this THE battery? 1

relliker writes: 6,000+ charge/deep-discharge cycles with minor capacity loss, safe rapid charging to 90% in 5 mins. Toshiba recently announced what looks like THE battery that could finally really revolutionize the electric car industry. Will it happen? (actual Toshiba reference here)

Submission + - David/Goliath story brewing, Apple vs icontrolpad

relliker writes: Apple have just patented a design for an iphone gaming add-on after admitting that the iphone is somewhat hard to use as a games machine, here. The catch is, the design is not theirs. It was designed by a team of gaming afficionados, one member of which, Craig "craigix" Rothwell of openpandora.org fame is already twittering like mad about the bullet just fired by apple in their direction. This looks like a David against Goliath storm brewing. Will apple bully its way out of this as usual? The icontrolpad team are already in contact with their IP lawyer. icontrolpad was there first. Their design is already in production. Will apple still try to steamroller through them?

Submission + - Techie or Management beyond 39?

relliker writes: So here I am at 39, two contractual possibilities, practically same pay. Caveat? With one I continue being a techie for the foreseeable future, always having to keep myself up-to-date on everything tech and re-inventing myself with every web.x release to stay on top. With the other I'm being offered a chance to get into management, something I also enjoy doing and am seriously considering for the rest of my working life. The issue here is the age of my grey (or gray) matter. Will I still be employable in tech at this age and beyond or should I relinquish the struggle to keep up with progress and take the comfy "old man" management route so that I can stay employable even in my twilight years?
What would slashdot veterans do at this age?
