Along with Alan Ashton, a computer-science professor at Brigham Young University in the mid-1970s, Bastian and Ashton went on to create WordPerfect, the dominant word-processing software in the 1980s and early ’90s and one of the first pieces of software many Americans bought when they brought home their first PCs.
