Comment College = Classist Proxy Racism (Score 1) 448

There was a time when most jobs required a college degree. For a lot of jobs it didn't matter if the degree was of a relevant major but employers wanted that baseline that you were well balanced capable of performing for 4 years to get through the sausage grinder of school. It was called out 10 maybe 15 year ago however that being able to obtain a college degree is classist and it is racism by proxy denying job opportunity to those without college degrees. I don't know who drove who to charge of change, but Society or Employers; or both as a result of such criticism switched to "role based" jobs. Anyone who learns the skills can work within a role.. We are at the extreme of that now where when I walk into my doctors office I visit the scheduler or reception role, then I visit the role that collects my vitals, then I visit the role that diagnoses me, another role might lab test me for strep, another role might draw my blood, another role might take my xray, a pharmacy tech role might prepare a prescription, etc..

Android phones have long had superior hardware specs while Apple stays more conservative with hardware specs. The same has long been true of Windows laptops vs. MacBooks. If you want the best most powerful hardware don't buy Apple - apple's secret sauce is their software and control over the hardware rather than the hardware/features themselves.

Comment Chicago and St Louis (Score 1) 1139

I live between Chicago and St. Louis, and for the past 10+ years high speed rail is a re-occurring topic of discussion. I believe as envisioned american high speed rail is a joke. What they intend as high speed is less than 100mph and when you factor in stops along the way the actual average speed between end points will be much lower. It is a sad irony that countries like Spain can have high speed rail cutting across mountaneous areas at 180mph, but in flat land corn growing Illinois the best envisioned is 100mph. Along our rail coridor which is one of the leaders for anticipated federal funding the plan is to retrofit existing tracks for high speed rather than lay new rail from the ground up. So by decision to retrofit they're unable to achieve the real performance speeds that should be easily acheivable. IMHO the federal funding will be going into a retrofit of existing tracks that won't deliver on expected performance and results, and the average speed uptick will be modest. Just my $.02.
