Comment Re:Basic income (Score 2) 674

Conservative Canadian here, and I support the idea of minimum income to a point. The reason I do is because we are already wasting money on salaries for case workers who decide who is needy enough to warrant welfare payments. We also pay money to process and jail people who commit crimes of necessity. By cutting out the bureaucracy of wealth redistribution we could implement a system where people are paid a minimum income.

Also our current system introduces a perverse incentive for people to not look for work while taking welfare or employment insurance. If you do get a job then you are kicked off the program right away. If you loose your job again after 3 or 6 months then you have to go through the application process all over again. This means that people don't want to take the risk of loosing their benefits so they don't look for work. If everyone was given a basic amount we wouldn't have that problem so people would be free to look for ways to increase their incomes.

Also we could do away with the idea of minimum wage. Since everyone would already be getting a basic amount then employers could pay people what they thought the work was worth. This could then open up opportunities for people with disabilities or other issues that prevented them from holding regular jobs.

Comment Get a business partner (Score 1, Troll) 146

The idea of trekking out into the wilderness with an extra 20 lbs of tech gear just so you can fix client issues IF they come up doesn't sound very appealing. It also sounds highly risky from a business perspective. One your tech could get busted easily, falling rocks from cliff sides, dropped in a stream where the waterproof bag is then punctured by a stick, you just get separated from your gear for a day as a bear trashes your stuff looking for food, the satellite network could go down, etc. Also, YOU can get busted easily in the busy, you could break a finger or two, hypothermia from falling in the water, broken leg, etc. All those business risks could be avoided if you just get a business partner to whom you hand off operations while you're out in the bush. This would mean that your clients should have a much better chance of getting their issues fixed in a timely manner you'll keep them as clients.

If you're dead set on working from a mountain top, having a partner to serve as a back up would also be a good idea. This would allow you to test out different tech setups in the bush while your partner watches the shop while you're away.

Comment Cost isn't the problem (Score 1) 654

I ride the metro because I don't have a car. The cost doesn't really factor in for me. It's $80/month and goes where ever I need to (mostly).

That said, my main issues are the speed at which the busses move and who crowded they are. We'd benefit more with more dedicated bus lanes (and better enforcement for the ones we have) and more busses running. My current commute takes over an hour, if they could shave 15mins off my commute I'd gladly pay an extra $40/month and take transit more.

Other issues if transit was free would be homeless using the busses as shelter in the winter. Homelessness is a problem and we need to find a long term solution for that before giving away public transit for free. It doesn't matter if we can travel anywhere to work, if we all don't have safe places to sleep in.

They might adopt a system of giving the base OS away for free but then sell the higher end features for the OS. Similar to how they marketed Win7 with their home, student, pro, super, ultimate, extreme, and ridiculous versions of their software. I could see them releasing the base server OS for free. But if you want to drop an Outlook, Active Directory, and IIS on there, you'd have to buy the add ons.

This would be good since people who are just pirating the software would become legit users. Small businesses that can't afford windows could use it with Apache or perhaps an entry level SMB Server add on. And they could then continue making massive amounts of money on the enterprise clients with their full stack (and full price) offerings.

Under representation of women and minorities in IT is worth looking into from a purely HR perspective. We could be loosing out on some talented people from those groups. However performing the Bechdel Test on an organization isn't going to help us figure out why women and minorities are underrepresented.

Also measuring this sort of thing on the company level isn't very helpful either. In small organizations randomness in the hiring process is going to determine the gender make up of a company more than equitable hiring practices. So some firms will be made up of mostly women and some mostly men.

If you're OK with doing some minor renos, how about building a sunken cabinet that extends into the floor? You could seal it off from the rest of the crawlspace to keep out the vermin/moisture. And you could also build something to hang some rackmount cases from so that the front panels would be facing up. This way you could get a 1U to run your OS with Plex on it, and then have a 3U case for your NAS. Oh and probably room for a batter backup too! You'd be able to put some sort of a cover over and put carpet on it so it would be hidden. But when you need to replace a drive or upgrade your system you'd have relatively easy access. This sort of setup might make cabling easier for you as well.

I found the action a little too soft on the Realforce, I've got the 45-30g weighted model, but the all 45g weighted HHKB has been great with just the right amount of key pop. Not everyone likes the layout of the HHKB but you can can get 45g weighted Realforces too. They also come in silenced models as well.

You can also get a board with Cherry MX keyswitches and add o-rings to the stems. This softens the bottoming out and reduces the noice.

I don't work for Elite Keyboards, I just like their store. I bought my current HHKB from them and was happy with their service.

There's a problem with a firewall that's out of my reach. This will be solved tomorrow morning around 9:00 (CET). Until then everyone in the queue will be served one at a time. But with full line speed. No one will be able to upload anything to the others in the meantime, thus rendering the BitTorrent protocol rather meaningless. But you'll still get the files. Hang in there. We're sooo close now :)
