Submission + - Pirate bay Founder Released From Solitary Confinement (torrentfreak.com)

TrueSatan writes: Pirate bay founder Gottfrid Svartholm is set to be released from solitary confinement but is still to serve the remainder of a 1 year sentence relating to Pirate Bay activities. 5 months remain of that sentence and they are to be served in a normal prison with far less restrictions on his confinement...assuming no new charges are brought against him.

He had been accused of involvement in the hacking of Swedish IT firm Logica but no charges have been substantiated in this case. He was later implicated in a second case but, once more, no charges have been substantiated against him http://torrentfreak.com/pirate-bay-founder-arrested-again-on-suspicion-of-new-hacking-fraud-offenses-121110/ . Given that his solitary confinement has not resulted, thus far, in additional charges and that it is far and above the intended sentence in the original case one might have thought that some reduction in sentence or other leniency was more than his due but this doesn't appear to be forthcoming.

Submission + - Bitcoins join global bank network (bbc.co.uk)

another random user writes: Bitcoin-Central, a currency exchange that specialises in virtual cash has won the right to operate as a bank. They got the go-ahead thanks to a deal with French financial firms Aqoba and Credit Mutuel.

The exchange is one of many that swaps bitcoins, computer generated cash, for real world currencies. The change in status makes it easier to use bitcoins and bestows national protections on balances held at the exchange.

Under European laws, the deal means Bitcoin-Central becomes a Payment Services Provider (PSP) that has an International Bank ID number. This puts it on an equal footing with other payment networks such as PayPal and WorldPay. As a PSP it will be able to issue debit cards, carry out real-time transfers to other banks and accept transfers into its own coffers.

My first comment on slashdot... :) I agree that having a degree may have little to do with on the job performance. I think the real reason why vembu likes to hire undergrads and high school students is that they will stick around with his company for 5-6 years at low enough salaries that it makes his business competitive. The employees cannot obviously leave the company in search of greener pastures since they lack the requisite qualifications and knowing that, they have no option to quit the company, but to perform. And in India, it is a notoriously difficult to land a job at a software company without a degree. (15 years education) unlike in the west, where you may get a job if you show the aptitude.

It isn't easy being the parent of a six-year-old. However, it's a pretty small price to pay for having somebody around the house who understands computers.
