"Team" is a modern euphamism for "committee".
Teams are good where there are legitimate reasons to have them. Unfortunately, most engineering teams amply demonstrate why most of the more significant innovations in history are credited to individuals.
Teams can be greater than the sum of their parts, but can rarely exceed the capabilities of their weakest members by a significant amount. The best model is a "skunk works" organization where you assemble the minimum necessary number of the most capable people available. Once you exclude the dull normals and traditional team players, it's amazing how quickly a consensus can be reached.
I've never been considered a team player, and I'm rather proud of it. OTOH, as a manager, I've assembled some excellent teams of exceptional individuals where a team was legitimately required.
