Mono Comes To Android 257

A reader writes "After releasing Monotouch for iPhone which allows c# development on iOS, Novell has announced the availability of Mono for Android. Will this give us the 'one language to rule them all' that Java failed to bring, or will the bad blood between the F/OSS groups and Microsoft make this a dead end?"

Goodbye, HD Component Video 469

glogger writes "Jim Willcox, the video expert at Consumer Reports, bids farewell to our ability to get high-definition video via the analog component-video connections on Blu-ray players. Thanks to Hollywood pirate-paranoia, potentially millions of law-abiding viewers will have their choices restricted. Quoting: 'Hollywood studios now have the right to insert an ICT "flag" into a Blu-ray movie; if it detects that a player is using an analog connection that doesn't support HDCP, it downconverts the video's 1080p (1920 by 1080) native resolution to 960 by 540 (540p): better than DVD quality but only about one-quarter of full HD quality. This ensures that high-def video is available only through the copy-protected HDMI outputs.'"

DoE Develops Flexible Glass Stronger Than Steel 242

An anonymous reader writes "The Department of Energy Office of Science recently collaborated with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the California Institute of Technology to develop a resilient yet malleable new type of glass that is stronger than steel. The material can also be molded, and it bends when subjected to stress instead of shattering. The glass is actually a microalloy and features metallic elements such as palladium. This metal has a high 'bulk-to-shear' stiffness ratio that counteracts the intrinsic brittleness of glassy materials. The team that developed the material believes that by changing various ratios, they could make it even stronger."

Comment Re:Minnesota (Score 1) 364

Summers in Minnesota are among my favorite but the reason they feel so great is because winter was so awful! My long-term plan is to live 9 months out of the year in the SE or pacific NW and then spend as much time in minnesota as possible in the summer.

Submission + - Nationwide domain name/yard sign conspiracy (rjmetrics.com) 1

robertjmoore writes: "Everywhere I go lately, I see these lawn signs that say "Single?" and then give a URL with my town's name in it. Being a huge business intelligence geek with too much time on my hands, I decided to track down who was behind them and wound up uncovering ten thousand domain names, a massively coordinated and well-funded guerilla marketing machine, and the $45 Million revenue business hiding behind it all. Hot off the presses, these are my findings."

Comment Am I a minority for actually enjoying vista? (Score 2, Informative) 776

My Desktop OS History:

1985-1987 - CP/M
87-96 Various versions of DOS
93-present Linux, FreeBSD
96-98 Win95
98-2000 Win98
2000-2002 Win2000
2002-2008 WinXP
2008-present Vista SP1

Note the linux years there. I was running slackware before many knew linux existed. With that said, am I a minority for actually having a positive Vista experience? Yes, I have a powerful machine with lots of RAM, but so far I've found that I'm quicker to navigate and more productive in Vista than I ever was in XP. I run the 64 bit version and have had very few problems. I think many of the things they have done are a great improvement over previous versions of windows.

Does that make me evil?
