Math being taught today is not the math most of us on this site grew up with. The way they are teach math is likely one of the causes of the decline IMHO. Just check out the text books being used today. Takes my wife and I time to determine what the section our kids are learning is trying to teach.The "No Child Left Behind" and other initiatives has likely complicated the process of teaching/learning basic math skills.

So correct me if I missed the meaning, they intend to increase the work hours from 40 to 48 per week with the expected outcome of increasing employment and productivity? I think I am missing something? Wouldn't employers have an opportunity to reduce staff or at the very least not hire more staff to over the hours of operation since 12 person can do six days and if your business is open only six days you wont need someone to cover that sixth day anymore. As for productivity? Don't know about you but the longer I work the more tired I get and less productive due to fatigue. Definitely missing something in the premise that goi9gn from 40 to 48 hour will increase employment and productivity? What am I missing?

A few years ago I began looking at cluster storage options and was introduced to Ceph as well as Glusterfs. Looking around I found a distribution call Petasan that used ceph. It was quick and easy to stand up a 5 node 60 osd cluster for testing in my lab with iscsi, nfs and smb.

It might be more effective and beneficial to find a college fund for the newborn. Funds can be used throughout their lives to improve their skills which in turn improves benefits to the economy and their overall earnings potential. That in turn contributes to revenue to the various levels of government. Establish an automatic college fund, states already have college fund structures and can also contribute. Better educated and skilled society and job prospects. From trade schools, 2 year degrees, 4 year etc. through our their lives that can use the funds to improve their skills and future. My 2 cents

As we all know a backup isn't a backup until you have successfully done a recovery. I don't know about you but I have had instances where the backup was supposedly completed in an enterprise environment and when an event required a recovery, well let's say it did not go well. Be interesting to see how redundancy/testing is done to ensure a good backup with such large tapes

How often have we heard about the mass layoff and now the industry is surprised that people jump ship? The industry has shown a lack of loyalty to the employees the treated like replaceable widgets, it's no surprise that these employees are looking out for themselves. Add to that the various companies that replace their loyal employees with contractors (hmmm Disney etc) it shouldn't have surprised anyone that this would happen.

I think Spamhaus has taken this market and anyone else will have a hard time competing and still be profitable to make it worth while.

yes it would be cool to be on Mars but with the risks and costs the moon base should be the first step. Prove the technology closer to home, isn't that why we built the Space Station (other than job security for defense contractors across the globe). The moon has resources we can use to launch a mission to Mars. With the lower gravity than Mars the Moon base can give humanity a better look at how long term exposure to low gravity will affect us while still being close to home. An international moon research facility would provide a much better return on investment and prepare for a longer journey. Get a Moon base up and running can be done with robotics, testing climate controls, hydroponics, water reclamation/recycling etc as well as rocket designs, radiation shielding ... We could even send the Current Space station as an orbital go between for the Moon instead of crash the station into the ocean at end of life. put a few rockets and slowly take it into Moon orbit. once we have a base built on the moon that has been tested via robotics and remote science equipment an expedition can go to the station in orbit around the moon (where supplies could be waiting) then take a trip down the the lunar surface. Add a space elevator between the moon and orbiting space station so you don't need to use fuel. Robotic cargo ships can ferry supplies and refuse between earth and the space station. It just seems to me we just started crawling in space with the Space station and now we want to run like Forest Gump by sending a manned mission to Mars at a far higher price than going back to the Moon

Too often the adds are eating up more of show time and the shows they are putting on are crap reality shows. I for one have never had cable or satellite TV. I saw the crappy selections and the game they play in breaking up channels into various packages in order for you to get the 1 you wanted. The whole idea for cable I thought was no commercials at least that;s what I remember from way back when the cable companies started. Now it seems they are just as bad as broadcast TV. And how many reality crap shows and home shopping shows do we really need while great shows like Firefly are not given the chance to succeed. I did go with Netflix last year and haven't looked back. At least there are no commercials and I can watch the shows/movies on my schedule. Nothing like having your wife site through every episode for Stargate SG1, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe back to back over a few months. Next stop the Star Trek marathon. I would have signed up for hulu to get some of the shows they haven't released for Netflix but they still have commercials and i am not paying for commercials, i can get that for free on the broadcast channel

Are you lost and posting to the wrong message? No place did I propose new taxes or forcing anyone to do anything. And by the way the article i am commenting on is about the government using the tax dollars we already give them to support new grids that benefit conglomerates. no mention of forcing any agenda or any agenda for that matter other than making people self sufficient. I guess your answer is to leave things as they are and never try a different approach.
