It's not as simple as charging them for what they use, even if they increase the rate. The massive needs of a data center will mean the utilities (delivery, transmission, and generation are typically separate companies) will need to increase capacity significantly. Unless the data center owner is going to pay a massive connection fee, the utilities all need to front a lot of money for this build-out. The cost of this build-out is what is being passed on to the residential customers. Now imagine the losses the utilities will face once the big AI crash hits.

Some of us remember the dotcom bubble. Those of us who were asking those same questions back then were told we didn't understand "the new economy". Of course, the bubble burst, but Amazon owns the world now.

...so to speak. All the debate (at least the prominent ones the last few years) has focused on fairness and compassion. That's really misguided. The fact is that immigrants are a benefit to the economy. They are more entrepreneurial than native-born Americans. They work harder for less pay. The US became great because of large-scale immigration and not in spite of it.

Government should just not acknowledge it. If there's no recourse for theft, I don't think very many people will want to own it.

They did buy back a lot of them. They made me a buyback offer on my 2021 Bolt that was almost what I paid. I turned it down only because I couldn't find a replacement car I liked. I still love the car, and it's incredibly useful even with the 80% limit on charging. I can't really fault GM's handling of the recall. They started replacing all battery packs because they didn't have a way of identifying the defective battery cells. Although I haven't read the technical details, I would guess they figured out a way to identify the defective cells and coded it into this diagnostics software update.

Telling people there's a shortage on a product is the surest way to create a run on that product.

This reminds me of the Star Trek: TOS episode "A Taste of Armageddon" where the ongoing war between these two planet is fight by computer simulation. The computer simulation determines the casualties, and the individuals have to report to be killed humanely. Somehow, I don't think Kirk is going to destroy the computer to end this.

Do any of the older nerds remember when Microsoft was hyping their "self-healing network" in the 90's? Sys admins were going to become extinct according to their marketing.

Doesn't that 1973 definition also exclude goat's milk, sheep's milk, and even (human) breast milk? Why was the restriction only on its application to plant-based milks?

My friend worked at Intel until about 2 months ago. He was on a vacation in Japan when he received a message asking him to call. He had to pay for an international phone call to get laid off, and it ruined his vacation. I think he'd have preferred to read it in an email message when he got home.

I grew up in Korea eating silk worms. Kids loved it so much they made crackers shaped like the worms. Now that I've lived in the Western world for most of my life, I'm not sure I will ever eat it again, but I do remember that it was very tasty. My point is I don't think anybody would say South Korea didn't/doesn't have access to meat.

I think it's because companies have to find ways to grow in order to keep their stock price from dropping. Capitalism is broken in the sense that it encourages businesses to do things that do not benefit society.
