Actually, employers hate debts. It implies that this person needs money desperately and may be willing to do anything to get it (similar to what you said with the 14 hour days). However, the employer would be more afraid that a person with excessive debts would be more likely to steal from them. This is obviously something they do not want.
I can't disagree with you fully though. I would imagine an employer would prefer student loans debt to any other kind because this means the person has an education (assuming they didn't drop out and still have large amounts of debt), and, as the guy you quoted said, determination.
