Trying to save the old Palm OS that no developers wrote programs for was destined to die unless it could become something more important to the palm user than the shit the thing came with. We how enticing that was! Better networking, entertainment or even slicker interfaces like blackberry. Palm needs to decide its target market consumer and aggressively move there product to that market or Palm becomes a quaint has-been product like some many others

Journal Journal: SuperMac

Well, it has arrived. Wow. This Mac is a monster (both in size AND computing power). It is amazing just how fast this thing flies around OS X. I've yet to install anything other than Firefox and run software update, so I have four cores that aren't getting much exercise at the moment. (That comes very soon!).

One of the first things I am going to grab next is the MacFUSE package.

Feed Weak Vista Launch Continues To Take Its Toll On Computer Industry (techdirt.com)

The release of Vista was supposed to have been a boon for the computer industry, as many were expecting business and consumers to upgrade their hardware at the same time they upgraded their operating system. But, despite Microsoft's claims to the contrary, the launch has generally been regarded as weak. The upshot is that makers of computers and parts are now being forced to ratchet down expectations. Yesterday, chip maker AMD warned of terrible earnings stemming from low volume and a brutal price war with Intel. Today, hard drive maker Seagate is getting slammed after it warned of weak demand and a difficult price environment. The company didn't say it explicitly, but it seems that the whole industry may have produced way too many drives in anticipation of strong, Vista-driven sales that never materialized. Seagate, of course, has another challenge: convincing investors that its core business is not under threat from makers of flash memory. There's no evidence that its troubles are related to competition from flash, but you can be sure that investors are keeping a close eye on the situation. If makers of flash memory continue to sail along, and prices in that space hold up fairly well, you can be sure that obituaries for the hard drive industry will be written once again.

Feed IPCC Report: Climate Proofing North American Cities (sciencedaily.com)

Escalating tensions between water users are among the key challenges facing North America says the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Shifts in rainfall patterns, melting mountain glaciers, rising temperatures, increased demand and reduced supplies in some places are likely to aggravate the situation unless cuts are made in greenhouse gases to reduce the scale and pace of climate change.

Journal Journal: Riya Face Recognition is Powerful, But For Whom?

As I discussed earlier I have been Beta Testing the Riya Face Recognition Software. Has some power behind sucking up untold 1000's of images from my network of personal or at least semi-personal photos. The interesting points... First, it has a hard time distinguishing children from each other when the child doesn't have the same look like a boring adult. Let's file this under How not to would be avoided by face recognition software. Go with the flow and change that look every day or two to

Journal Journal: Riya, the face recognition software beta test

So as one of 1000 beta testers for the Riya Face Recognition Software I have good things to say about the program, but have reservations about the use and positioning of the product. First of all I must say that I am impressed with Riya's ability to pick out faces from the the photos and how easily it will learn and identify faces. Once or twice is all it takes to pick out that face again and again. Riya will also pick out any text or words in a photo and tag them for searching purposes. Thu

Journal Journal: What really happens if I don't enable cookies?

So many sites say "must have cookies enabled" to access some sections. What happens if I don't enable the cookies? and Duh? I don't mean "you don't get access then". I mean in theory what benefit to the user is have cookies enabling provide? I think it is only the site owners that derive anything from this requirement.
