Journal ramdam's Journal: Fighting with my Webcam on MacOSX 5

I got an Aiptek PenCam for Christmas.

It's a PC Only webcam, but I knew at least 2 generic solutions for MacOSX integration :

I've tested macam 0.7b2, but the quicktime component crashes many applications in my config (iBook dual USB running MacOS 10.2.3 with Quicktime 6.0.2). The macam application works well, but it's useless:
The quicktime component is mandatory in order to use the webcam with webcam applications such as Yahoo Messenger.

The IOExperts USB 1.O software does not support my webcam

:-(

Fighting with my Webcam on MacOSX

  • Got a cheap-ass digi-crap-cam. It is essentially a webcam that can take pictures. The pics are not bad, just take them at daylight ;-)

Anyways, it works in Windows 2000...but really... the drivers are the crappiest I've ever seen. No Mac support whatsoever. When I plug it in my iBook it just ignores it. Not even "device" detected as it did with my USB ISDN adapter. I didn't know about that webcam opensource effort. I'll try it out someday.

The digi-crap-cam I have is the Trust FamilyC@m 500 Flash. Never buy it... Stupidest 150, I ever spent (a reasonable digicam in Europe is at least 300, USies have it good) *sigh*

    • I just tried Macam version 0.7b2. It detects the cam but the screen stays black. I just sent an email to the maintainer of Macam to ask if he wants it as a donation. I'm sick 'n tired of this thing. ;-)

      Good luck with yours...

      • Thanks for your feedback.

According to the project website, Not having a given model of webcam is the sole raison this model is not supported by Macam. So Your donation might be helpful to future buyer of the Trust model.

I plan to send bug report to the maintener too.

Mac OSX seems to support some firewire webcam like the Unibrain one (seen at 120 but slightly more expensive on the AppleStore) without any driver !

The Phillips ToUcam familly is well supported by the generic drivers.

Hopefully it's a matter of time for my problem.

        Best regards
        • Well, I just wrote an email. I will see if the developer gets back to me. According to the Readme in de dmg, he is quite busy and gets way too much emails a day. You can be sure I weeded out the website on info before even starting to write the email. Why did you think I thought it was a good idea to donate it? ;-)

I mainly bought my cam because of it's "camera" abilities, not because of its webcam abilities. You know, toying around, making no serious pic. Nobody wants to see my ugly face on the web you know, I'm not a web-cam-babe. I'll just shell out some cash for a decent 300 digicam and get over it. Luckily, I always forget my end-year bonus... which makes me have 3/4 of a salary to throw around on goodies.

          " sole raison "
Nice typo. Are you by any chance French? No worries, I have no problem with frenchies, I live in Luxembourg myself.

          • Yes I'm french.
I'm not only a french citizen, but I also live in Paris ;-)

Hopefully I was born in Magascar, fruit of a french father and a malagasy mother.

So I'm lucky enough to have 2 cultures ;-)

To err is human -- to blame it on a computer is even more so.

Working...
