Journal queenofthe1ring's Journal: school 9

Well, I've attended every class now (except for Optics lab, which is it's own long story). I think the semester will be ok, academic wise anyways.

Optics is not what I was expecting. When I signed up for the class, Dr Andrews was teaching it, who I absolutely adore. And Optics lab had an actual assigned time. But not anymore. Some new guy is teaching it. I will not say his lecture style is bad, because were the class later in the morning, it would work out great. But Dr Andrews was more compatible with 8am classes. He did a better job of keeping your attention. Optics lab has become a do-it-on-your-own-time idiocy, since they wrongfully supposed that 7 people would all be able to agree on a timeslot that worked for them.

Anthropology is not currently interesting. She does not give any useful information during the lectures, at least as far as I can tell. I force myself to write down random things that she says just to make myself pay attention better. She gave us a handout today, which if she keeps doing so, I will probably move to the back of the classroom and spend the class period studying other things.

German is looking to be much better than I expected. Although it seems like a lot more interaction and speaking in class will be involved than I'm really comfortable with. She seems like she is very understanding of beginers with languages. The one thing that bothers me is that she didn't give us a vocabulary handout, and it doesn't look like she will. I like having the handouts to study from, and she didn't give us enough time to copy it all down saying that we'd learn it all by the end anyways.

Statistics I actually was dreading. I've heard mixed reviews about the class, and I just don't much like Statistics or Probability. It looks like it will be ok though, because despite being in the mid afternoon time slot, the teacher was very energetic and interesting. Hopefully that will continue.

Today I met with my math advisor to discuss my topic for my senior project. He ended up talking me into doing the harder of the 2 that he had picked out, but it doesn't seem like it will be particularly bad once I get the hang of matrices again. We're doing Cauchy Integrals with matrices. I'm actually working on it right now, and have gotten down to where I need to start doing the actual integration and I must now puzzle a little bit. Unfortunately I don't have my Linear Algebra book with me. Fortunately I do have my Complex Variables notes, which I'm sure will come in quite handy.

No, I don't really feel like talking about the other aspects of school, thank you.

  • Anthropology should get interesting later on in the semester when you get into the nitty gritty and actual cool stuff, like linguistics. The first part of it, like ANY new subject is that way. I'm taking Physical Anthropology this semester. Gunna learn alllllll about evolution. We've spent the first two classes bashing Creationist and the like. It's been rather fun I have to say. :) Hopefully your teacher will ramp it up a bit and make it interesting for ya. If not, I'm terribly sorry!
    • I think my class is only going to cover cultural anthropology. I think part of the problem is that she's never taught a class before, so she's like way nervous. Monotone voice that kinda trails off into inaudiable. Maybe once we actually get into the readings (beyond the text book I mean) things will be better.

      • Ick. Sorry about that. Sounds like my English teacher, except she's got some experience. She drives me batty because she treats us like we're in 3rd grade. Seriously, she has a 3 strike program with cell phones. Yes, as in 3 strikes your out. And the same goes for talking out of turn. I'll be brining my bottle and blankie to class from now on.

Cultural Anthro has its ups and downs I think. With the right person presenting the information, it can be fascinating. But that type of stuff in the wrong hands is
        • Thank you muchly for your offer of help! And good luck with your english teacher. I hear Mexico is lovely this time of year. ;-)

I imagine that the english class you're in also requires attendance. I think that's the worst part about these required and/or lower levels. It's usually poorly taught and you have to go to them. Not that I'd probably skip if I could (uptight A-type), but options are good.

          • Haha you're right on all points. I'm the uptight A-type as well. I'll bitch a whine about a professor that can't teach with no attendance policy and still suffer through every single lecture. I just finished writing my first essay for her of 4 we have to do this semester. Only 3 more to go and I'm done with English. Forever. :)
            • done with English. Forever.

Feels nice, doesn't it? I finished my last english class last semester. It was an internet class, so it was not too terrible. I like being done though. I think that when I put my mind to it I can communicate effectively with my writing (though I'm sure it never shows here). And I'll probably die without ever knowing the difference between who/whom. But I'm cool with that.

I also complain about having lots of homework to turn in, even though 90% of the time it's not f
