Hosting a Highly Inflammatory Document? 471

IndianaKim writes "I have been asked if I can host or assist in hosting a highly inflammatory document that reflects poorly on a Police Department. I want to help, but I also do not want the headache and possible subjection to search warrants and/or illegal searches. The document is so inflammatory that it could interest the FBI and DoJ and cause them to investigate the government officials involved. I live in the same county, but not the same city, and therefore could be subject to a search (legal or not) by some of these government agencies. I have been asked to host it on a server outside of the US. At this time, I do not have the ability to do that, but I could set it up if I needed to. My question is: would you host it if you were asked? How would you go about protecting the document and yourself?"

Intern Loses 800,000 Social Security Numbers 492

destinyland writes "A 22-year-old intern said today he's the 'scapegoat' for the loss of over 800,000 social security numbers - or roughly 7.3% of the people in the entire state of Ohio. From the article: 'The extent of my instructions on what to do after I removed the tapes from the tape drive and took the tapes out of the building was, bring these back tomorrow.' Three months into his $10.50-an-hour internship, he left the tapes in his car overnight — unencrypted — and they were stolen. Interestingly, the intern reports to a $125-an-hour consultant — and was advised not to tell the police that sensitive information had been stolen, which initially resulted in his becoming the prime suspect for the theft. Ohio's Inspector General faults the lack of data encryption — and too many layers of consultants. But their investigation (pdf) revealed that Ohio's Office of Management and Budget had been using the exact same procedure for over eight years."

I actually do work only 40 to 50 hours a week (usually no more than 40), make around $45k a year, and have time to enjoy life. It helps that my parents are well-off and generous with their money. I also live in Los Angeles.

I don't believe that people should have to get lucky, move to a small town or the Midwest, or settle for an old house to have more leisure. The entire country's goal should be to achieve more money and more leisure, with work approaching zero as much as possible. (Intelligent robots, anyone?) That's called progress, and it makes modernization worthwhile.

I also happen to be a woman in IT who would leave the profession entirely if I could make money by myself on the Internet or through investments, though I would probably still do software and web development on the side just to keep my skills sharp.
