Media: Novel Corona virus sporeading through China. Don't panic. It's just like a bad flu. Me: I take Vitamin C and D on a regular basis and workout. I never get a cold or flu anyways. I'm good Trump: Travel ban! Media: Trump is a racists! The virus isn't even dangerous now. Kiss an asian! Impeach Trump! Me:Hmmm Fauci: 2 million will die!. The end is near! Masks are not effective. Save them for the nurses. Everybody stay in your homes t prevent the hospitals from being overrun! Media: Listen to the science you morons! Trump didn't protect us. Impeach Trump! Me: But the science just told me last week not to worry... masks don't work... Media: Wear a mask or you are going to kill people Sheeple: Wear a mask or you are going to kill me and my grandparents. We don't care about the numbers, it's what we are being told to think that matters. Fauci: I lied before about the masks. Wear them. Government: Wear a mask or you will be fined. Me: I'm not sick.3 people have died in my county (500k+). All were over 70. All had underlying conditions. No one is pushing vitamins, diet, or exercise. It's just stay in doors, wear a mask, and wait for a vaccine. I think I would be an idiot to blindly follow these people. It would be allot easier to just be quiet, wear a mask, and wait for the next mandate. It's really easy to follow the masses and not call out the stupidity. This first started out that we needed to flatten the curve. We needed to make sure the hospitals were not overrun. Now what are we doing? Waiting for a cure? How completely stupid. I personally know of two suicides that are easily related to the economic downturn. Now we are just fighting with eachother about wearing masks. I'll wear a mask if I'm in a situation that requires it. Not walking down the street. Not at the beach. Not in an empty store. Not just, because you think I should. Worry about yourselves you slobs. Your health is not my responsibility. This professional victimhood and blaming everyone else for all of your problems has got to stop. WE WILL ALL GET THIS VIRUS ONE DAY JUST LIKE THE COLD OR FLU REGARDLESS IF EVERYONE WEARS A MASK OR NOT!!!

Herschel Spectroscopy of Future Supernova 21

davecl writes "ESA's Herschel Space Telescope has released its first spectroscopic results. These include observations of VYCMa, a star 50 times as massive as the sun and soon to become a supernova, as well as a nearby galaxy, more distant colliding starburst galaxies and a comet in our own solar system. The spectra show more lines than have ever been seen in these objects in the far-infrared and will allow astronomers to work out the detailed chemistry and physics behind star and planet formation as well as the last stages of stellar evolution before VYCMa's eventual collapse into a supernova. More coverage is available at the Herschel Mission Blog, which I run."

Jetman Attempts Intercontinental Flight 140

Last year we ran the story of Yves Rossy and his DIY jetwings. Yves spent $190,000 and countless hours building a set of jet-powered wings which he used to cross the English Channel. Rossy's next goal is to cross the Strait of Gibraltar, from Tangier in Morocco and Tarifa on the southwestern tip of Spain. From the article: "Using a four-cylinder jet pack and carbon fibre wings spanning over 8ft, he will jump out of a plane at 6,500 ft and cruise at 130 mph until he reaches the Spanish coast, when he will parachute to earth." Update 18:57 GMT: mytrip writes: "Yves Rossy took off from Tangiers but five minutes into an expected 15-minute flight he was obliged to ditch into the wind-swept waters."

Scientists Say a Dirty Child Is a Healthy Child 331

Researchers from the School of Medicine at the University of California have shown that the more germs a child is exposed to, the better their immune system in later life. Their study found that keeping a child's skin too clean impaired the skin's ability to heal itself. From the article: "'These germs are actually good for us,' said Professor Richard Gallo, who led the research. Common bacterial species, known as staphylococci, which can cause inflammation when under the skin, are 'good bacteria' when on the surface, where they can reduce inflammation."

1. Reformat and install xp with just the updates. 2. Remove any shortcuts to IE and don't install any other browser. 3. Make a shared folder on the host machine. install virtual pc. 5. Install xp on a new vm image. do all the updates and install all of their software. 6. Create a shortcut to the share on the host. 7. Make a copy of that image. 8. Let the user know that if they want to do anything on the net they need to load the VM. Any files they want saved need to be saved in the shared folder. This is my setup, I don't run AV software and I visit many questionable sites in my pursuit of knowledge on the net. My VM stays in fullscreen mode all the time and my gf doesn't even really know the difference. If I ever feel like my machine is compromised, I revert my VM back to the original.

Google Releases the SDK For Version 1.6 of Android 69

Qwavel writes "This release includes improvements to the Android Market, the Search Framework, and Text-to-Speech. It now has support for more screen resolutions and CDMA phones. Android 1.6 is based on v2.6.29 of the Linux kernel and is expected in phones that will be available next month. The mystery of Android 1.6, however, is Google's continued unwillingness to commit to a Bluetooth API and any Bluetooth functionality beyond the basic audio functions."

Online Backup Solutions? 422

OmnipotentEntity asks: "I'm an IT Manager (and also a lifeguard, don't ask) for a small private club. Recently parts of our server's RAID went bad just as Hurricane Dennis hit, making life a living hell for me and everyone involved. So, I figured perhaps backing up information online would make stuff like this less incredibly painful. A quick browse of Google will show that there are a lot of businesses offering automatic, offsite, online backup solutions. It seems it's becoming a big thing. The largest problem is that they all look alike -- same implementation, similar websites, it looks like someone came through this part of the Internet with a cookie cutter, and by the information available on the website and pricing (which may or may not be available without filling out 100 forms) I can't tell a good company from bad company. I've never had any experience with any of these companies, and I wanted to know if any of you guys had, and if so what were your experiences with them? What are the things to look for? What are the things to avoid? Am I barking up the wrong tree?"

Fault Tolerant Archive Solutions? 18

Bob Washburne asks: "Does anyone know of a file system or storage protocol which allows you to recover a file even when sections of the media have become corrupt? This would be for archival storage - tapes, CR-R's, etc. - rather than on-line. I have been doing a lot of digital retoration/preservation work. Digitising home recordings from the 50's, photos from the 1890's, etc. and cleaning them up. I now have several gig of files - and it will continue to grow - representing hundreds of hours of work and I'm starting to get nervous about losing it to wear or bad media."
