Journal pythorlh's Journal: Cancer, take two... 6

I had my surgical follow-up yesterday. I was given the wonderful news that though they didn't think so at the time, I do in fact have thyroid cancer. Therfore, I now get to look forward to another couple months of worrying, and another neck surgery, and another three weeks off work. And thyroid hormone replacements for the rest of my life.

Strangely, this has not really affected me the way the first diagnosis did. I guess I've pretty much come to terms with it already. This is just extending the medical aspects, the emotional ones seem to have already run their course. Either that, or it just hasn't hit me yet, and I'll be going absolutely nuts in a few days.

Part of it is that the first surgery went so incredibly well. I said this before, but I am most grateful to my surgeon for his work.

  • not much i can say except i'm really glad it's not worse than that, and that we're in an age where thyroid meds actually exist?

As Anubi explained to me, "Think of it as a chance to be much more than usually involved with your body's autonomous functions."

Yeah, i think i told him something that started with an F. But you'll tell us all if we can help, right? I'd even be willing to send a thank you card to Mr. The Surgeon. On one site i frequent, we had a member who was in the hospital and availed ourselv

    • Hmmm... Not being the most social of sorts around here, I doubt that the surgeon would be overwhelmed, but I appreciate the thought. I don't think it's necessary, though.

Does our Lady Dragon suffer from thyroid problems? I have not read all your journals, and though I know that you are ill, I am unaware of the nature of your illness. In fact, you remind me very much of my (estranged) wife. She has been ill for just over 9 years, now. Mostly heart problems, of a sort that the doctor's are unable to cont

      • i've got celiac sprue and possibly sjogren's syndrome or lupus, we haven't figured out what yet. Low red blood cell count, high ANAs. Vasovagal syncope and migraine, so i'm having serious trouble with fainting and throwing up and the like. And yet i still work full time. people tell me i've got a great attitude, but i think it's pure luck that it's focused on good things like work rather than global domination, y'know?

  • I am so sorry to hear that you have cancer in your body. Whether it is easily treatable or not, knowing it is in there at all sucks the sharpest of rocks, and I understand that.
As far as the therapy after is concerned, the thyroid medications are usually inexpensive, which is a plus, right? ***hugs***
  • I hope the prognosis for treatment is good. I do think that a positive attitude is a very good step in dealing with something like this. Sol is a great example.

Cancer is bad, but it can be beaten. My mother has been living with it (a slow-growing lymphoma) for several years now. Good luck with this.

A budget is just a method of worrying before you spend money, as well as afterward.
