Comment Google Needs to Maintain Ecosystem (Score 2) 29

News like this makes me rethink continuing with the Google and Android ecosystem. I bought a Pixel phone in part for better integration with my other Google devices. If they start cutting back on support and updates for my devices with Google Assistant and Google TV my reasons to stay with Google start disappearing. Hearing about these changes reminds me Google is notorious for abandoning its tech (and users).

It doesn't have to offend someone the same way being called a racial slur would offend. It's the cumulative effect of seeing the same word you use to describe the colour of your skin being used in a negative context. It is seeing words like master and slave being used as descriptors in computer science books, designs, and code while maybe being the only one in that class or company for whom that echos back a few generations to when your great, great-grandfather was someone else's property. Add these to the long list of other ways black people are held back and maybe we can start to see why there may not be that many black coders around to answer your question.

Comment Bumper is Just One Part of Kid-proofing (Score 1) 163

I think the draw of these "kids tablets" is that they are designed for use by kids out of the box. The bumper is just the start - the real features for parents are the usage controls. Toys'R'us is also carrying the Kurio Kids Tablet which has controls on the types of apps that can be used and purchased as well as website browsing controls and time-limits on a per-user basis. You can have up to 8 profiles and customize the controls for each one. As a parent of 4 kids ages 3, 5, 7, and 9 that is the type of tablet I want. And as a bonus once the kids are asleep I can just wipe the peanut-butter off the screen and use my own profile.
