This is part of the problem with PM's not being technical (and most management of tech areas). The wrong question for a PM to ask is, "Can XYZ be done". The wonderful thing about technology is that the same goal can be approached many ways, and technologies combined in unique ways. While lots of things are possible, how many are worth the money and man hours it would take, both in development and support?

"Can it be done?" should be replaced by "Should it be done?". When the work is done and we step back and start supporting, living with and working with the result of the effort, will be truly get what we say we want?

More things can be done than should be done. This is where not having fundamental tech knowledge on the part of a PM leads to trouble.
