Comment A matter of timing. (Score 1) 435

I think the real issue that people don't bring into consideration is the likelihood of the timing. Even if the time it takes for intelligent life to form was somehow precisely 13.8 Billion years and it happened to form in a trillion other planets in our observable universe all roughly within the same 5 Million years; It would be incredibly unlikely for any one of those civilizations to reach inter-galactic travel (FTL or otherwise) and expand out of their solar system and by chance be reaching directly to Earth and arrive or communicate with us during the last 10,000 years. Perhaps even more likely that it would have to be the last 2-3,000 years to not have been considered Gods.

Comment Were they told it was a test of fire safety equip? (Score 1) 172

I feel like the context given to the test subjects would greatly affect the outcome of this experiment.... For instance, if I were told that I would be testing fire safety equipment, I would probably feel the need to follow the robot even into the wrong room. Especially if I knew it were being tested, my curiosity would probably get the best of me anyway and I would feel compelled to follow the robot regardless since I knew I wasn't in real danger.

This is great for the world and people getting together and carpooling is wonderful for the environment, however as a business model it falls into a much smaller category. After finding a carpool group that works people will likely stop using the app and just pay each other and exchange information since going to work is pretty much an every day occurrence. This effectively will cut out the middle-man for any really successful matches.

I don't agree... with the proper graphics setup, an 8k desktop environment at something like 80" in a wide format would be an amazing experience for productivity.... there are already tons of professions and enthusiasts that use 6+ monitors arranged in a grid to display lots of information or use many different applications. This just eliminates the bezels. People think it's all about the pixel density... this is more about stretching your screen without losing resolution. One huge curved 8k display would be my dream working in dispatch I have 2-5 websites, email, proprietary software, mileage program, and notes all crammed onto 3 1080p screens and I'm suffocating.

Uber Discloses Database Breach, Targets GitHub With Subpoena 47

New submitter SwampApe tips news that Uber has revealed a database breach from 2014. The company says the database contained names and diver's license numbers of their drivers, about 50,000 of which were accessed by an unauthorized third party. As part of their investigation into who was behind the breach, Uber has filed a lawsuit which includes a subpoena request for GitHub. "Uber's security team knows the public IP address used by the database invader, and wants to link that number against the IP addresses and usernames of anyone who looked at the GitHub-hosted gist in question – ID 9556255 – which we note today no longer exists. It's possible the gist contained a leaked login key, or internal source code that contained a key that should not have been made public."

Researchers Build Wearable Generators 84

schliz writes "From the itnews article: 'Bioengineers from the University of Auckland have developed cheap, lightweight rubber power generators that could harvest up to a Watt of power if embedded in shoes. The researchers built on "dielectric elastomer generator" technology that used the movements of a flexible, non-conductive material to build up charge in attached electrodes.'"
