I started out programming on a programmable calculator, before they became pocket sized. The calculator, about 2.5 ft square and 6 inches high, sat on a wheeled cart and had a magnetic card writer/reader (to save and load your programs). Once we mastered that (in our High School Computer Math class) we moved onto Basic using a Teletype, with punch-tape writer/reader, connected to a computer in a distant town.
