How Astronauts Took the Most Important Photo In Space History 108

The Bad Astronomer writes "On December 24, 1968, the Apollo 8 astronauts saw the Earth rising over the limb of the Moon. The photo they took of this moment — dubbed Earthrise — has become an icon of our need to explore, and to protect our home world. NASA has just released a video explaining how the astronauts were able to capture this unique moment, which included a dash of both coincidence and fast teamwork."

How China Will Get To the Moon Before a Google Lunar XPrize Winner 173

An anonymous reader writes in with this link about the advances in China's lunar program. "A $30 million Google-backed competition to land a spacecraft on the moon may be about to be scooped. China's Chang'e 3 probe successfully put itself into lunar orbit on Friday in preparation for an attempted touchdown around Dec. 14. China won't be winning the prize money, which is reserved for privately funded, previously enrolled teams, not government agencies."

Even easier would be the case where someone touches his nose. Tactile information travels from the tip of the finger, along the arm, all the way to the brain. Information also travels from the tip of the nose to the brain. Two wildly different distances, yet we experience the same event. Clearly, there's some buffering going on here. The mechanism by which that happens is interesting enough to warrant its own research, don't you think?
