I don't deny "that we can have a fluent conversation with" a computer is extremely impressive. Where I take issue is the "super smart" and "mindblowing". Like many advances in AI this technology teaches us as much about what intelligence isn't as it does about what it is. We used to think if we had machines that could play chess we would have super intelligence. It turns out playing chess wasn't the pinnacle of human achievement we thought it was. Until recently we thought the same of fluent conversation, but again we see that a machine that talk good does not general intelligence make.
Intellectually I think it's great we got to do this experiment and see just what comes out the other side when scale transformer models to unimaginable sizes. It turns out some shaky non-deterministic tools that are quite useful for some tasks, but not to be trusted in high stakes situations.
Given the promises being made in marketing these things, the amount of money spent, and the fact that people like Sam are telling society that we should diver all our effort to this instead of solving the existential crisis of climate change how can you be shocked that people are underwhelmed.
