The beauty of this nation is that our children are encouraged to make life altering decisions that may affect the rest of their(our)lives. And to question authority. I rather have fewer motivated and productive scientists than a bunch of unhappy citizens. I'll bet a nickel that children in Asia and many other developing nations have very little control when it comes to deciding on their education.
Besides, who's to say that a liberal arts major can't discover the next E=MC^2.
